The products in this collection are decorated with patterns created in the nineteenth century by an anonymous artist native to Tongatapu, in the Kingdom of Tonga, Polynesia. At the time, the woman was responsible for creating all the patterns that adorned the clothes of the natives of the island. For each pattern she created, she received a certain amount of yards of fabric as compensation. The fabrics were mainly made using the thin sheets of a hibiscus species’ inner rind, which was then beaten and joined together to form a long parallelogram of fabric. These parallelograms were repeatedly wrapped around the body in the manner of a petticoat, leaving the chest, arms, and shoulders uncovered.
These artistic creations strike for the grace, the genuineness, the powerful creative force, and the ingenuity that allowed this anonymous artist, belonging to a stage of civilization different from ours, to express her artistic potential with rudimentary means.
Adapting these ornaments to the cushions we present to you has meant for us to start a dialogue, almost two centuries later, with the Polynesian artist, trying to learn from her the principles of her artistic know-how, adapting them to our digital craftsmanship and the current means of production.
